Abstract: The aim of this review is to examine the tax system operated in Sri Lanka in its medieval period. The review was based both on primary and secondary literary sources and inscriptions. As examination revealed, the main income of the state was derived through the imposition and collection of taxes. The main economic activities in this period were agriculture and trade. Although, government tax system was based on both sectors, since the foreign trade activities during the medieval period were significantly high, income generated through the taxes imposed on trade was high.
